Six inmates of Kashimpur central jail in Gazipur were shot dead by security personnel while 209 others managed to flee on Tuesday.
Senior Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur High Security Central Jail Subrata Kumar Bala confirmed the matter on Wednesday.
The names and identities of the deceased will be revealed later, said the jail official.
Bala stated that on Tuesday (August 6), the inmates inside Kashimpur High Security Central Jail rebelled. During the rebellion, the inmates tried to break the prison.
When the prison guards tried to stop them, the inmates attacked the guards and tried to escape by breaking the walls, climbing over the walls, and some even tried to escape by attaching pipes to the walls, he said.
At one point, the army was called, and they conducted a commando operation to suppress the rebellion.
However, in the meantime, 209 inmates managed to escape by climbing over the walls.
At that time, six inmates were killed by security personnel’s firing.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the morgue of Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
After 9:30 AM on Tuesday, members of the army arrived by helicopter and took control of the main gate and all other gates of the prison. Earlier that morning, locals heard extensive gunfire from inside the prison.
50 inmates escape Kushtia jail
Around 50 inmates have escaped the Kushtia District Jail around 2:00pm on Wednesday.
Kushtia District Commissioner Ehtasham Reza said that several inmates have escaped. The army has taken control of the prison now.
Witnesses said that after 2:00pm, inmates were seen leaving the jail. Several were seen escaping on motorcycles via PTI Road, with their faces covered with towels.
Upon hearing this news, locals gathered in the jail area.
Later, army personnel arrived at the scene, fired blank shots, and dispersed the curious crowd.
According to sources, several inmates had court dates for bail today. As they were being released, around 50 other inmates took the opportunity to escape.
No prison officials responded to calls.
A total of 596 prisoners and detainees escaped from Satkhira District Jail following an attack on the facility hours after Miscreants stormed into the Sherpur District Jail allowing 500 inmates to flee from the jail.
With these two incidents, miscreants attacked at five jails in last two weeks and around 2000 inmates, including convicted militants escaped from the jails.
