State-run mobile phone operator Teletalk will launch the experimental fifth generation (5G) internet service in the country in December next.
Post and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar said this at a virtual discussion meeting on '5G Ecosystem in Bangladesh and Upcoming Technologies' organised by Telecom Reporters Network Bangladesh (TRNB) on Saturday.
Mustafa Jabbar said, "Teletalk will start 5G service on test this year. The 5G spectrum will be auctioned for other mobile phone operators in December. So, other operators will be able to launch 5G next year."
However, 5G will be spread throughout the country very quickly and this service will be useful for businesses and industrialists, he added.
The minister said, "BTCL has been asked to get ready to provide 5G service in five special economic zones of the country."
Teletalk Managing Director Sahab Uddin said, "We are getting prepared to launch 5G service in December. At the beginning, 200 sites will be launched in Dhaka."
TRNB general secretary Samir Kumar Dey highlighted a presentation with Five-G. He said that 5G service is being given at 10 GBPS speed in different countries of the world. This speed will be upgraded to 100 GBPS by 2026.
BTRC chairman Shyam Sundor Sikder participated in the programme as special guest. Besides, BTRC's Commissioner and 5G Policy Committee president AKM Shahiduzzaman, AMTOB president Eric, Chief Executive Officer of Grameenphone Yasir Ajman, Robi Chief Executive Officer Riyaz Rashid, Chief Operating Officer of Huawei Bangladesh, Ericsson Country manager Abdus Salam and others spoke. TRNB president Rashed Mehdi presided over the function.
