596 inmates escape in Satkhira jailbreak

Over 200 voluntarily surrender

A total of 596 prisoners and detainees escaped from Satkhira District Jail following an attack on the facility hours after Miscreants stormed into the Sherpur District Jail allowing 500 inmates to flee from the jail.

With these two incidents, miscreants attacked at five jails in last two weeks and around 2000 inmates, including convicted militants escaped from the jails.

Earlier on July 19, miscreants carried out an attack on the Narsingdi district jail, vandalized valuables, and looted 85 firearms and over 8,015 rounds of bullets.

Taking advantage of the turmoil, 826 inmates including nine militants escaped.

The jailbreak in Satkhira occurred on Monday evening when a group of miscreants launched an assault on the jail, causing extensive damage and freeing the inmates housed in 10 separate cells.

Hasna Jahan Bithi, the jailer of Satkhira District Jail, confirmed the matter, stating, "A group of miscreants attacked the jail around 7 pm on Monday. They broke the lock on the jail gate and freed the inmates from 10 cells. However, many have started surrendering since Tuesday morning."

By 10 am on Tuesday, more than 200 inmates returned to the jail, according to sources. Eyewitnesses reported seeing groups of escaped inmates arriving at the jail throughout the morning, signaling their intent to surrender. 

Earlier on the same day, Monday, miscreants stormed into the Sherpur District Jail, allowing 500 inmates to flee from the jail.

A mob equipped with sticks and local weapons brought out a procession amid curfew in the afternoon.

At one stage, they stormed into the jail at Damdama-Kaliganj area of the district town, breaking open the jail gate and setting fire.

Around 500 inmates managed to flee the jail.

The attack was carried out between 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm, said Deputy Commissioner of Sherpur district Abdullah Al Khairun.

Miscreants also torched different establishments and offices in the district.

Besides, miscreants also set the Sadar Police Station on fire around 1 pm. DC quarter, New Market, Sadar ASP circle office, Zila Parishad, district election office, Sonali Bank, district Ansar-VDP office and other shops and establishments were vandalised.
