Some 513 students from schools, colleges, universities and madrasas committed suicide last year 2023, according to a survey report.
Aachol Foundation, a Dhaka-based charity organisation, mainly working to create mental health awareness, revealed its survey report at a press conference on Saturday.
The non-profit organization conducted the survey by compiling the data from 105 national and local newspapers, and online portals on suicide among students.
The suicide among students across the country slightly decreased compared to that of the previous year 2022, the survey report said.
According 2022 survey report of Aachol Foundation, 532 students of different educational institutions committed suicide in 2022.
Among the total number of students who committed suicide in 2023, 227 were at the school level.
Some 140 college students at college level, 98 university students and 48 madrasa students also committed suicide in 2023.
Besides, 309 individuals, who killed themselves in the year were female, the survey reveals.
Teenagers are at high risk of taking their own lives, with 66.5 percent of those who died by suicide aged between 13 and 19 years-old. Among them, 65 percent were girls.
The highest 149 student suicides were recorded in Dhaka division in the year. Among the 98 university students who killed themselves, 19 were from different public universities. Twentty-six students from national universities, 14 from private universities, seven from science and technology universities, six from medical colleges, five from nursing institutes, two from polytechnic institutes, three from engineering universities, one from an agricultural university, and 15 were from other institutions took their own lives.
