The 50th death anniversary of Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh was observed at Nur Mohammad Nagar in Chandibarpur union of Narail in a befitting manner on Sunday maintaining social distancing amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh trust and Narail district administration jointly arranged various programmes to mark his death anniversary.
The programmes were began with rally, placing of floral wreaths and guard of honour at the memorial Monument at Nur Mohammad Nagar and special prayer in Nur Mohammad Sheikh Library and Memorial Museum under Chandibarpur union in Narail sadar upazila of the district. Besides gift items from the Prime Minister were distributed at the programme.
Deputy Commissioner of Narail who also president of Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh trust, Muhammad Habibur Rahman was present as chief guest while Police Super Probir Kumar Ray, Narail sadar UNO Sadia Islam, Additional Police Super Tanjila Siddiqa, Trustee of Bir Shrestha Nur Mohammad Sheikh Freedom Fighter SA Matin, Nur Mohammad Sheikh Trust’s member secretary and Chandibarpur Union Parishad Chairman Azizur Rahman Bhuyan, Journalist Sultan Mahmood were present among others in the programmes.
Nur Mohammad Sheikh was born on February 26,1936 at Mahiskhola village (present name Nur Mohammad Nagar) in Chandibarpur union of Narail sadar upazila. He joined then East Pakistan Rifles (EPR),which is now Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB),on February 26,1959. He later joined the independence war in 1971. He was killed on September 5,1971 at Goalhati in Jashore which was known as the Goalhati Battle. While he and his team were patrolling with four of his fellow soldiers, Pakistani Armed Forces attacked them from all sides. At one point of the battle, one of his fellow soldiers got hit by a bullet. He then carried the wounded soldier and while retreating, he fired at Pakistani forces from different position in order to make them think that freedom fighters are heavy in numbers and weapons.
At one point, a mortar hit Nur Mohammad Sheikh and he got severely injured.
Still he took a light machine gun from a fellow soldier and continued to provide cover fire to help his other team members retreat from the battle. He provided cover valiantly until he died.
