5 IU students handed over to police for ragging

Five students of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia were caught red handed and handed over to police for ragging at Lalon Shah Hall of the university on Monday night. 

According to campus sources, the incident of ragging occurred at room no 330 of Lalon Shah Hall. Five students were caught for the incident and handed over to the IU police station, the sources said.  

They are Sabbir Hossen, Shehan Sharif Sheikh, Shoriful Islam Limon, and Kanto Borua of Finance and Banking department under 2022-23 academic year and Sanjoy Borua of the Law and Land Management department of the same year.

The victims of ragging are Sayem, Rakibul, Shamim, Rakib, Amir Hamza, Tarek, Rishan, Tanvir and Mamun of the Finance and Banking department under 2023-24 academic year.

According to campus sources, Shehan called nine freshers at room no 330 of Lalon Shah Hall at 9:00pm and they were tortured physically and mentally by Sabbir and Sanjoy.

Hasanul Banna Oli, an inmate of the hall said, ‘I went to room no 330 soon after hearing about the ragging incident. I see Sanjoy and Sabbir mentally torturing some freshers. Later, when the concerned authorities were informed about the matter, the accused were held and then handed over to police.’

Lalon Shah Hall Provost Professor Dr. Akhtar Hossain, said, ‘The alleged have been tkaken into police custody. A committee has been formed to investigate the incident.’

University proctor Professor Dr. Shahinuzzaman, said, ‘I am aware of the situation. A decision will be made after a meeting with the proctorial body, student advisors, and other stakeholders.’

The OC of the IU police station, Sheikh Farid Uddin, said, ‘The university authorities handed over the five students to the police. Steps will be taken after discussion with the university authorities.’
