Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Saturday said a total of 495 foreign nationals are now languishing in the country’s different jails.
He made this remark while addressing a seminar titled ‘Combating Trafficking: Repatriation of victims of trafficking’ in a city hotel. National Human Rights Commissions organised the programme.
Among them, some 57 have been convicted, the home boss said adding that though some 86 of the foreign citizens were freed by courts, their home countries refused to take them back, that is why they are still in prisons.

Talking about human trafficking, Kamal said Bangladeshis are not being forcibly taken to foreign countries, rather they fall victims to frauds who bring them abroad on the pretext of better life. Some of the victims are being detained abroad. But the number of human trafficking incidents is decreasing day by day, he said adding there are committees in every district to resist human trafficking, he continued. The home ministry is also monitoring continuously. Besides, the capabilities of Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) and coastguards in the bordering area have been enhanced, the home minister said.
