Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries Project has been extensively working for protection and prosperity of fisheries resources at Chitalmari in Bagerhat. Smart fish farming with the cooperation of the government is going on in waterbodies of 226 acres of land in 7 unions of the Upazila.
A total of 78 female and 322 male fish farmers are relentlessly working under the supervision of Department of Fisheries.
Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Sheikh Asadullah told this to the journalists at a press conference on Tuesday. The programme was held at the office of the Fisheries officers on the occasion of National Fisheries Week-2024.
Marine Fisheries Officer Md Ashraful Islam, Journalists Munshi Delwar Hossain, Selim Sultan Sagor, Md Safayet Hossain, Kapil Ghosh, Md Merazul Islam Khan and others were present there.
There are 16 thousand fish enclosures and 6,958 ponds in Chitalmari Upazila. Among these, Bagda prawn is farmed in 2,500 enclosures and Galda shrimp is farmed in 13,500 enclosures. The fish farmers also farm other fishes with shrimp in both enclosures and ponds. The farmers farm five thousand metric tonnes Galda shrimp, three thousand metric tonnes other fishes and 400 metric tonnes Bagda shrimp.
