34 RU students acquitted of charges

All 34 students accused in the incident of clashes during anti-evening course movement at Rajshahi University were acquitted of all their charges. Enayet Kabir Sarker, Metropolitan Session Judge of Rajshahi pronounced the judgement by acquitting them of all charges at a crowded court room here this noon. 

According to the brief prosecution statement, on February 2, 2014, police and activists of Chhatra League launched a sudden attack on several thousand students of RU who were staging a movement demanding cancellation of evening courses and decrease of exorbitant fees.

More than 100 students were injured in the attack. Aftermath of the incident, agitated students ransacked furniture and documents at Zuberi Bhaban, Academic building and in the residential halls of RU. 

A day after the incident, RU administration, Police and Chhatra League filed six cases against the unruly students. In the case filed by police, allegation of ransacking the state property and creating obstacles in performing duty were brought against 34 students including 16 students belonged to Progressive student’s alliance and Shibir activists including former President of Islami Chhatra Shibir of R. The charge sheet of the case was formed on May-7, 2917. However, the court after testimony of 22 witnesses, acquitted all the accused from the charges.
