300-bed quarantine centre being set up for India returnees

The government is setting up an institutional quarantine centre in Bogura for those who will be repatriated from India. They will be kept at the Government Azizul Haque College’s higher secondary building (old building) at Phulbari in the district town. The classrooms of the college have already been cleaned, and work has been started on setting up the bed.

According to district administration sources, Bangladeshis stranded in India will start returning from April 25. Among the Bangladeshis stuck over there, residents of Bogura district will be sent to the quarantine centre.

Assistant Professor of English Department of the college, Subrata Kumar Saha, said that Bogura district administration is working to prepare quarantine centre, and a total of 14 rooms with a capacity of 300 beds is being prepared for institutional quarantine. And their foods will be cooked in the hostel behind the new building. Bogura Deputy Commissioner Fayez Ahmed visited to see the overall preparations. Private organisation TMMS is providing the beds needed for the proposed Quarantine Center.

30 beds were sent from TMSS till Sunday. The rest will arrive in two days. Subrata added that army officers in the city are currently using some rooms to ensure social distancing. We have been told that they will take care of the Quarantine Center.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Bogura, Abdul Malek, said that mainly for the Bangladeshis stranded in India, the high school building of the government Azizul Haque College is being prepared as an institutional quarantine center. He said, "We have been informed that the Bangladeshi people from Bogura who are stuck in India will be kept in these centres. We are working to look after it.”

When asked when it would be opened, he said, “Those coming back, will immediately be sent to government quarantine centres as soon as they land.”

“However, we are not sure about their arrival. And in addition the army will ensure the people have sufficient food supply for their daily needs and will ensure that internal rules and regulations are in place”, he added. Deputy Executive Director of TMSS Matiur Rahman said, “We are providing high quality beds for the quarantine center.”
