3 workers buried alive in Rangamati

Mudslide takes place for illegal under-construction building

At least three construction workers were buried alive in Rangamati on Sunday afternoon.  The three worker were killed and some others were injured when a big chunk of earth fell on them during working in an under construction building at Rangamati Women’s College area in the hill town. 

The deceased were identified as Tanveer, 17, son of Shukkur Ali, Sentu Miah, 55, son of Sultan Miah, and Arfan Ali, 52, son of Mahbat Ali. All of them hailed from Dharmopasha in Sunamganj district and they were tenants at Reserve Bazar area in the town. 

Injured Sabuj Miah is under treatment at Rangamati General Hospital. 

The accident took place at about 1:00pm when a group of labourers were constructing a base of an under construction building by cutting a hill beside the building and abruptly a big chunk of earth fell on them, leaving three dead on the spot and another one injured. 

Receiving information, fire fighters, army men, police and locals rushed to the spot and rescued the injured and recovered the bodies. 

As an instant grant, Tk22 thousand for each victim’s families was given from the district administration. 

AKM Manur Rashid, deputy commissioner of Rangamati, told the newsmen that the owner of that building was constructing it completely illegally and without taking any precautionary steps. 

One of a primary school’s teacher Parveen Akhter is the owner of the building. “We seal off the building and filed case for taking legal action against those who responsible for the incident,” said Officer in-Charge of Kotwali police station Mir Jahidul Islam Roni.
