A Tangail court sentenced three people to death and six others to different terms in jail for killing two fourth graders at Mirzapur upazila in the district.
Additional District and Sessions Judge of Tangail Saud Hasan delivered the verdict on Monday in presence of eight of the convicts while one remains absconding.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Rafiqul Islam Khan Alo confirmed the matter.
Among the convicts, the court delivered death penalty to Milton, Bahadur and Roni Mia. Of the six other convicts, Malek, Shahinur and Zahirul were sentenced to jail until death, and Shamim, Arif, and Zakir were awarded life term in prison.
All of them live in different villages of Mirzapur Upazila of Tangail and Dhamrai Upazila of Dhaka. The court handed down the verdict in the presence of eight of the accused. One accused is a fugitive.
Nine of the five gave their confessional statement at court before the police pressed charges against all of them on June 8 in 2016.
On January 27 in 2016, the victims identified as Shakil, 11, and Imran, 11, two students of Dhamrai Balia BRAC School in Savar of Dhaka went missing after they went to visit a cultural programme at the Haria Bohumukhi High School field in Mirzapur.
The next day, one of their abductors contacted an uncle of Shakil and Imran and demanded Tk 1 lakh as ransom.
On January 29, police found their throat-slit bodies from a lemon field in Gumgram Bazar area in Mirzapur. Later, Shakil’s mother Josna Begum filed a case in connection.
