Three alleged robbers, including two siblings, were killed in a ‘four-hour long gunfight’ with police at a hill near Rongikhali at Teknaf upazila in Cox's Bazar early on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Nurul Alam, 41, his brother Syed Alam, 36, and Abdul Monaf, 21, of Rongikhali area under Hnila union. Police claimed to have recovered 18 firearms, 200 rounds of ammunition and 55,000 yaba tablets from the spot after the gunfight.
Police also claimed that five of their members were also injured during the gunfight that took place at about 3:00 am.
Prodip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf Police Station, said that on information, a team of police conducted the raid at the hill, where a group of robbers took position, heavily loaded with firearms.
Sensing presence of police, the robbers opened fire at the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliate with gunshots and triggering a gunfight that lasted for four hours. Miscreants fled the scene at one stage of the gunfight, said the OC.
Later, police recovered the three bullet hit bodies, firearms, ammunitions and yaba pills from the spot, the police official added.
The bodies were sent to Cox's Bazar General Hospital for autopsy. The injured police men took treatment from Taknaf Upazila Health Complex, Prodip said.
