3 lakh people marooned in Moulvibazar

205 shelter centres open for flood-hit people

Around 300,000 people of about 30 unions under seven upazilas of Moulvibazar have been marooned as over 1,000 villages have gone under floodwater in the district.

However, the flood situation remained unchanged in the district on Friday. Most of the rivers were flowing above the danger mark.

District administration sources said a total of 205 shelter centres have been opened in the district for the flood-affected people. About 7,000 people of 1,500 families have already gone to the shelter centres. They have also taken about 500 cattle to the safe shelters.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Urmi Binte Salam said sufficient relief materials have been stocked for the flood-affected people in the district. It is being distributed to every shelter. At the same time, 70 medical teams have also been formed for them.

The water levels of the rivers in Moulvibazar have increased following heavy rains in the Indian state of Tripura in the last several days.

A media worker of Agartala in the Tripura state, Md Mosahid Ali, told this correspondent over mobile phone that Kailashahar and Assam in the state of Tripura experienced heavy rains for the past few days. And this rainwater again flows through the Surma, Kushiara, Manu, Dhalai and Khoai rivers of Bangladesh and falls into the Bay of Bengal. On Wednesday, it rained all day.

According to the information of the Water Development Board (WDB), water in Manu, Kushiara and Juri rivers of Moulvibazar district was flowing above the danger level at 11:00am on Thursday. However, the water level of Dhalai river is decreasing.

According to WDB sources, the water of Manu river was flowing above the danger limit of 37 cm at Railway Bridge Point and 41 cm above the danger limit at Chandnighat bridge. Dhalai River was flowing below the danger level. Kushiara River is flowing 19 cm above the danger level at Sherpur Bridge. Juri river is flowing 209 cm above the danger level.

According to the sources of the district administration, 240 bottles of 10 litres of pure water have been provided to the flood affected areas while 65,000 water purification tablets have been supplied. 

A total of 422 metric tons of relief materials have been provided in the district while Tk 2.87 lakh in cash, 465 packets of dry food and 1,200 packets of other cooked food were distributed.

Moulvibazar Agriculture Extension Department Deputy Director Samsuddin said Aus paddy on 4,300 hectares of land and other crops on 852 hectares of land have gone under water. 

Moulvibazar District Fisheries Officer Shahnewaz Siraji said there are 65 ponds and farms in the district - the area of which is 47 hectares. Fishes of various species worth over Tk 50 lakh of these ponds and farms have been washed away, he said.
