Police have arrested three people, including the father-in-law, in connection with the murder of Amar Farooq Sourav, 24, a first year student of Presidency University.
Superintendent of Police in Mymensingh Masum Ahmed Bhuiyan gave the information at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
The superintendent of police said Israt Jahan Iva got married three years ago. As her husband moved to Canada, she started a relationship with her cousin Sourav. They also got married at a house in Dhaka on May 9 but Eva's father Elias Ali did not accept it.
Eva was sent to Canada on May 16. On June 1, Sourav came to Mymensingh to meet Eva’s former father-in-law to end her previous marriage. Sensing the matter, Elias Ali called Sourav at his home through his son Mridul. When Sourav went to his home, Elias Ali and his brother-in-law Farooq killed him first by hitting him on the head with a knife. Then, his body was cut into four pieces with chapati.
Later, he bought a new luggage from Ganginarpar in the city, filled the luggage with four dismembered body parts and threw it in the river.
Later, the police arrested Farooq from Dhaka and Elias Ali from Dhobaura, an upazila bordering Mymensingh. Abdul Hannan, the driver of the private car which carried Sourav's body, was also arrested in this incident.
The Superintendent of Police said Elias Ali destroyed the fingers of Sourav's hands so that none could identify Sourav.
The police superintendent said others involved in the incident will also be brought under the law.
