The farmers of six upazilas in Jhenaidah districts are going to produce over 3.50 lakh tons of rice in ongoing transplanting Aman (T-Aman) season.
Transplanting of saplings was completed by August last in the district. The production of 350,374 tons of rice was targeted where the average yield was estimated for 3.36 tons of rice on each hectare.
The farmers in the district had produced 380,787 tons of rice on 104,333 hectares of land in the last season, said the source related to the office of the deputy director of the department of agriculture extension (DAE) in Jhenaidah Khamarbari.
Farmer Keramat Sheikh of village Kabirpur in Shailkupa upazila when contacted at his cropland at village Shastibar said they had faced severe drought since preparing of seedbeds. The situation was almost same during transplanting of saplings. Since early August they stared witnessing some rainwater for the farming. The well to do farmers anyhow managed alternative irrigation water, while the common farmers were almost deprived from the facilities due to huge irrigation water supply charge for the crops.
DAE Jhenaidah Khamarbari office sources said they had taken target to produce 350,374 tons of rice on a total of 104,355 hectares of land in the season, while the farmers had covered 104,333 hectares of land. Achievement of land was 25,250 hectares in Jhenaidah Sadar, 18,625 hectares in Kaliganj, 6,150 hectares in Kotchandpur, 18,185 hectares in bordering Moheshpur, 24,921 hectares in Shailkupa and remaining 11,224 hectares of land in Harinakundu. Transplanting activities was completed by August 31 last, sources said.
DAE deputy director of Jhenaidah Khamarbari Asgar Ali when contacted said sub assistant agriculture officers in the field level widely known as SAAOs were advised to stand by the farmers so that they (farmers) could use safe and better quality seeds, balanced use of chemical fertilizers, maintain pest management and use of modern technology thrown for them. It will save irrigation cost partially and make the TAman farming profitable, the DAE deputy director said.
