The populous and commercial gathering district Narayanganj have been facing huge food grain deficiency against population due to shortage of cultivable land and hampered by toxic weather for crops.
According to the government statistics made by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistic (BBS) there are thirty three lac four hundred (33,00400) people in Narayanganj. For the population it is needed four lac eighty six thousand and nine hundred five (4,86,905) metric tons of paddy and wheat every year.
Additional deputy director of district agriculture extension office Md. Tajul Islam told this correspondent that there are an amount of three lac fifty one thousand two hundred ten (3,51,210) metric tons of food grains deficiency in every year. We are able to yield one lac thirty five thousand six hundred ninety five (1,35,695) metric tons of food grains every year on thirty six thousand four hundred ninety one (36,491) hector land, he added.
The highest agricultural land is in Araihazar Upazila and the lowest amount in Bandar Upazila among all five Upazila in the district.
Experts and farmers opined that there are two reasons behind huge food grain deficiency in the district. First of all the amount of cultivable land decreased and the production hampers due to different obstacles of unfriendly factories wastages.
Most of the farmers of Araihazar and Rupganj Upazila area seem to have been in good condition in the past. But nowadays they have no voice, having victimized their cultivation.
The amount of cultivable land gradually decreasing due to some unplanned housing company and factories owner, environment organization opined.
If the government has no urgent policy to save the agricultural land then there will not remain any cultivable land and the district has to base on other district’s food grains, farmers claimed.
Most of the cultivable land lost fertility both land and crops due to smoke emitting from the brick kilns and other factories toxic water.
