The district branch of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department has launched an operation at Chaumuhani Bazar in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali to monitor and control the edible oil market. During this time, 2,350 liters of oil stocked in the hope of selling edible oil (soybean oil) at high prices has been seized. NS Traders was fined Tk 50,000 and New Bhai Bhai Store was fined Tk 20,000. The seized oils were later sold to the general public at retail prices.
Operations were conducted at different places of the market from morning to afternoon on Friday, said Noakhali Assistant Director of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department Kausar Mia. Begumganj Model Police Station assisted in the operation.
Assistant Director of the Department of Consumer Rights Kausar Mia confirmed the matter and said that raids were being carried out against edible oil hoarders at various places in Chaumuhani since morning. During the operation, 2,350 liters of bottled oil was recovered from two establishments in Kalitala Road and DB Road area of Chaumuhani. Those sellers created an artificial crisis of oil in the market by hoarding in the hope of selling at higher prices. The oils are then sold to retailers at retail prices. Efforts are being made to restore normal oil prices in the market. The official also said that the campaign will continue in the public interest.
