The 22nd founding anniversary of community clinic will be observed across the country today.
Community clinics have been playing an important role in providing quality healthcare to the poor people of rural areas and creating awareness at the grassroots level.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman introduced the concept of community clinic to reach primary health care at the grassroots level of the newly independent country.
In order to implement the dream of the Father of the nation, the first community clinic of the country was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 1996, at Patgati of Tungipara in Gopalganj district on April 26 in 2000.
At present there are about 14,000 community clinics across the country that has brought health services to the doorsteps of the people.
Community clinics provide free first aid and necessary medicines to the people in villages and remote areas.
Pijush Kanti Roy, Community Healthcare Provider of Diakhali Community Clinic in Ashulia told the Bangladesh Post that a total of 27 types of first aid medicine are provided to the people residing in surrounding areas free of cost.
“Patients are basically provided with emergency first aid facilities here. They are also referred to Upazilla Health Complexes in case of critical or severe condition. Regular health checkup services are provided here to pregnant women throughout the year. VIA, a visual examination of the uterus is also done here free of cost once or twice a year during special programmes,” he said.
The community clinics have become reliable health care centres for the people of villages. People are satisfied as they are getting free health care near their homes and do not have to run to hospitals for trivial problems or diseases.
