Two youths died after allegedly drinking alcohol at Ishwardi upazila in Pabna on Sunday night. They died while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. The deceased youths are were identified as Wahedur Rahman Sajal, 27, son of former Mayor of Ishwardi Municipality and member of BNP central Committee Maklesur Rahman Bablu and Raju, 32, son of Shamim Hossain of Fateh Mohammadpur area of the town.
According to local sources, four youths became drank alcohol buying from a homeopath physician Haider Ali Shimul’s shop beside Government Nazimuddin High School on Loko Road in the town on Saturday night.
Sajal and Raju were admitted to the Ishwardi Health Complex on Sunday morning while the other two were missing. Later, Sajal and Raju were sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital when their condition got worse. They died while undergoing treatment at around 9 pm on Sunday. Two or three residents of Fateh Mohammadpur area said they were both drug addicts.
Ishwardi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bahauddin Farooqi said he had heard about the death of two people. Postmortem is underway at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. No one has complained about it yet. Investigation into the matter will determine if they have died due to alcohol consumption.
Meanwhile, members of the Ishwardi Upazila Narcotics Control Directorate searched Shimul's drugstore on Monday. A Circle inspector, unwilling to be name said two liters of illegal alcohol were recovered after searching Shimul's drugstore and Shimul is on the run.
