Two gold shops were robbed in Chitlia of Munshiganj Sadar Upazila. The boatman of the police personnel carrying boat was injured in a bomb blast caused by the robbers. Police are trying to identify the culprits by looking at the CCTV cameras of the nearby mosque.
Locals of the area said that the robbers looted more than 100 Bhoris of gold and Tk 40 lakh. The activities of the masked robbers were seen on the CCTV cameras of the nearby mosque. The gang of about 20 robbers had cocktails and big machetes with them. Sensing the location of the police, they threw a cocktail and fled in a speedboat. Manu Nag and Nikhil Banik, owners of the looted goldsmith's shops in the market informed about the incident around 2.30 pm on Wednesday.
Sadar Police Station OC Abu Bakar Siddique, quoting the victim shop owners and locals, said a gang of about 20 robbers came to Chitlia Bazar by river. After showing the weapons, first they tied two night watchmen of the market and later the merchants. Later, they looted about Tk 35-40 lakh from the gold shop of Nikhil Banik.
After that, robbers looted 6-7 Bhoris of gold from the gold factory of Manunag from next door. The mosque's amplifier declared a robbery while the robbers were active robbing the shops. When the policemen patrolling via boat tried to come forward, the robbers threw a cocktail at them and fled in a speedboat.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sumon Dev, assured to take legal action against the accused. He said the robbery was being investigated after seeing local and CCTV footage. Attempts are being made to arrest those involved. Police were working to catch another accused on the way to the river.
