The authorities of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia observed the 19th anniversary of August 21 grenade attack on the campus on Monday.
Marking the day, the IU authorities brought out a procession on the campus led by IU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Shaikh Abdus Salam.
After parading the main roads of the campus, the procession ended at the ‘Mrittunjoyee Mujub’ moral.
Later, IU VC placed a floral wreath on the mural along with its Pro-vice chancellor Professor Dr M Mahbubur Rahman, Treasurer Professor Dr M Alamgir Hossain Bhuiya, and acting registrar H M Ali Hasan. IU proctor Professor Dr Shahadat Hossain Azad, student advisor Professor Dr Shelina Nasrin, and different faculty deans, teachers, officers and students were present at the protest procession.
Later, Teachers Association, Bangabandhu Parishad, Bangabandhu Parishad Teachers Unit, Shapla forum, different halls, and IU BCL unit also offered a floral wreath at the same place. One-minute solicitude and prayer were offered in the end for the eternal peace of martyrs who were brutally killed on the day.
At the discussion IU VC Dr Salam also said, ‘The antagonists wanted to turn the country into Taliban on August 21. Bangabandhu thought about welfare for the people and thought for our motherland. The miscreants believed that if Bangabandhu was alive, they would not be able to establish Pakistani rule. So they wanted to kill all the members of Bangabandhu's family on August 15, 1975. They did not succeed on that day and again on August 21, 2004, they attacked the Awami League's peace rally with a grenade attack, wanting to wipe out all of his family.’
