199 members of Bangladesh Force Marine Unit-8 (BANFMU-8) of the Bangladesh Navy, currently engaged in the UN Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan have been awarded the UN Peacekeeping Medal.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR),on this occasion, a medal parade of the BANFMU-8 contingent was held in Juba, South Sudan.
The Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMIS) Lt. Gen. Mohan Subramaniam was present as the chief guest. He presented the medals to 199 officers and sailors of the navy in recognition of their contributions to peacekeeping operations.
Commander Chattogram Naval Region Rear Admiral Abdullah Al Mamun Chowdhury, UNMIS Force Chief of Staff Major General Marco Machado, UNPOL Police Commissioner Kirstin Fosen and South Sudan Armed Forces JVMM Chief Major General Mou Manashe Malak and other senior officers and persons also attended the medal parade ceremony.
During the medal parade, Force Commander Lt. Gen. Subramaniam praised the members of the Bangladesh Navy for their engagement in the peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. He mentioned that the Bangladesh Navy contingent has been making an outstanding contribution in the transport of UN fuel, foodstuffs and other critical commodities by conducting operations with great courage and skill in the hostile environment and conflict areas of the Nile River.
He also commented that the Bangladesh Navy contingent is appreciatively performing important duties like conducting regular patrolling on the river, rescue operations, diving operations and providing transportation and security to all the United Nations agencies deployed in South Sudan.
He expressed his gratitude to the Bangladesh Navy and the Bangladesh government for providing assistance to the United Nations peacekeeping operations. He also hoped that this trend would continue in the future.
The Bangladesh Navy contingent has been participating in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan since 2015 with the sole efforts of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. As UNMIS' sole marine force in South Sudan, the Bangladesh Navy is engaged in the implementation of the UN mandate in the wider Nile region.
Bangladesh Navy contingent has successfully completed 50 Logistics Operations (Operation Life Line) along the 1300 km long Nile River. Since its deployment, the Bangladesh Navy contingent has been making outstanding contributions to the development and peace of the South Sudan government and people.
