The seventeen Bangladeshi fishermen, who were detained in Myanmar after their boat drifted to its maritime territory, have returned home safely.
Myanmar Navy handed over the fishermen to the Bangladesh Coast Guard at the waterline on Friday night. The fishermen were under the Coast Guard’s custody and later they handed over to police. Later, they were transferred to their families, reports a press release of Bangladesh Coast Guard.
According to the press release, the seventeen Bangladeshi fishermen returned home safely with the help of Bangladesh Embassy in Myanmar and the Bangladesh Coast Guard.
The fishermen are from Chattogram, Bhola, Munshiganj and Chandpur districts.
Myanmar Navy detained the fishermen in the country’s waters near Saint Martin's Island of Bangladesh on Thursday. The boat’s engine went out of order while the fishermen were fishing in the Saint Martin’s area. At one point, the boat was captured when it drifted into the Myanmar territory.
Later, Bangladesh Embassy in Myanmar and the Bangladesh Coast Guard made efforts to bring them back through discussion with Myanmar officials. At one stage of the discussion, the Myanmar authorities handed over the fishermen to the Coast Guard personnel.
