Four elected and four others nearest contestants have saved their security deposit in recent Jatiya Sangsad Election was held on January 7, while 18 candidates have lost their security deposit when they failed to bag at least per cent of total votes in the last polls held on January 7. The security deposited by the remaining winners will be given after publication of the gazette, said the election commission office sources in Jhenaidah.
Six aspirants participated in the polls from Jhenaiodah-1 seat comprising Shailkupa upazila where the number of voters was 306,336. Of them 178,494 voters had cast their franchise which was 58.27 percent . Incumbent lawmaker Abdul Hyee with the symbol Boat bagged the seat with 94,379 votes defeating his nearest candidate Nazrul Islam Dulal fighting with Truck as an independent aspirant. Dulal secured 60,547 votes.
Remaining four candidates who lost their security were KA Jahangir Mazmader of Trinamool BNP having 162 votes, Manika Alam of Jataiya party with Langal having 394 votes, Munia Afrin, an independent with Phulkopi having 159 votes and Anichur Rahman of National Peoples Party (NPP) with Aam (mango) having 238 votes.
In Jhenaidah-2 seat comprising Jhenaidah sadar and Harinakundu upazila, a total of 11 candidates had participated in the polls. Of them nine lost their security for the same reason. Independent candidate, founder of country’s leading pharmaceutical industry Radiant Pharmaceuticals, also a renowned donor and social worker Naser Shahrier Zahedi Mahul with his Eagle bagged the seat securing 136,778 votes, while his nearest rival of Boat and incumbent lawmaker Tahjib Alam Siddiquee Somi secured 116,207 votes. Here winner Mahul bagged additional 20,501 votes.
The aspirants lost their security were Khondokar Hafizur Rahman Faruque of National Awami Party (NAP) contesting with Kureghar secured 242 votes, Abdul Hannan Khan of Bangladesh Kalyan Party (BKP) contesting with wristwatch secured 296 votes, Jamrul Islam of Trinamool BNP contesting with Sonali Ansh secured 256 votes, Nazrul Islam of Bangladesh Supreme Party (BSP) contesting with Ektara secured 124 votes, Nasir Uddin of Bangladesh Congress contesting with Daab (green cocoanut) secured 680 votes, Fazlul Kabir of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) contesting with Mashal secured 526 votes, Mahfuzur Rahman of Jatiya Party (JP) contesting with Langal secured 798 votes, Mizanur Rahman Mizu of NPP contesting with Aam secured 594 votes and Sharif Mohammad Badrul Haider of Bangladesh Sangskritik Muktijote fighting with cane secured 176 votes. 263,691 voters out of total 476,304 voters cast their votes which was 55.36 percent of the total votes, the EC sources said.
In Jhenaidah-3 seat comprising bordering Moheshpur and Kotchandpur upazilas, the Boat candidate Major General (retired) Salah Uddin Miazi with his Boat was elected having 83,015 votes, while his nearest rival independent candidate and incumbent lawmaker Shafiqul Azam Khan Chanchal with the symbol Truck lost the position when he secured 64,909 votes. Remaining two candidates including a local Journalist Abdur Rahaman of JP with Langal secured 2,151 votes and another independent candidate, also an ex-lawmaker principal Nabi Newaz lost his security deposit securing 594 votes in the polls.
Out of total 403,224 voters- 156,559 voters had cast their votes which was 38.83 percent of the total votes.
Three candidates out of five had lost their security deposit in the polls in Jhenaidah-4 seat comprising Kaliganj and four unions of Jhenaidah sadar upazila.
Incumbent lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar contesting with Boat having the AL ticket had occupied the seat once again when he bagged 95,907 votes defeating his nearest candidate Abdur Rashid Khokan, an independent candidate fighting with Truck.
Khokan secured 57,194 votes. 161,619 voters had cast their choice out of total 315,62o votes. 51.21 percent voters cast their votes, the EC sources said.
