In recent developments, 17 vice-chancellors of public universities in Bangladesh have resigned following a change in government. Among the most recent resignations are the vice-chancellors of Chittagong University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), and Sheikh Hasina University.
The Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong University, Dr. Abu Taher, submitted his resignation on Sunday, according to the university’s acting registrar, KM Noor Ahmad. In addition to the vice-chancellor, the university's hall principals and members of the provostial body also resigned. These resignations follow the demands of the anti-discrimination student movement, which set a 24-hour deadline for the vice-chancellor to step down.
KUET Vice-Chancellor Mihir Ranjan Halder and Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Sobhan Mia also resigned yesterday. They submitted their resignations to the President via email, citing personal reasons.
Similarly, Golam Kabir, Vice-Chancellor of Sheikh Hasina University in Netrokona, resigned on Sunday. His resignation was sent to the President through the Registrar's office.
Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor of Pabna University of Science and Technology, SM Mustafa Kamal, and Treasurer KM Salah Uddin resigned, submitting their letters to the Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Department. Earlier, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Professor Kazi Shahidullah, resigned, along with the vice-chancellors of Jagannath University, National University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Comilla University, and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib University of Science and Technology.
Resignations also came from the vice-chancellors of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Kushtia Islamic University, Rajshahi University, Jahangirnagar University, Begum Rokeya University, Maulana Bhasani University of Science and Technology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, and Haji Mohammad Danesh University of Science and Technology.
