Published : 13 Jan 2024 04:42 PM

Chitagong district administration on Thursday evicted 17 illegal structures from Parir Pahar government land in Chittagong city. Thus the authorities removed the long-standing obstacles in this area.

The eviction drive was conducted at the direction of Chittagong Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abul Basar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman and Executive Magistrate Md Tawhidul Islam led the operation.

The eviction operation was conducted from 9:30 am to 4 pm on Thursday.  Bakolia Circle Assistant Commissioner (Lands) AFM Shamim was present during the drive.  A total of 30 policemen of CMP, engineers and technicians of PDB, engineers and technicians of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution and teams of fire service and civil defence were included in the drive.

It is known that 0.1436 acres of BS 3024 and 3030 dags of BS No. 1 Khas Khatian of Andarkilla Mauza of Kotwali police station has been freed from encroachment.  In the interest of the public in the rescued area, according to the plan of the Deputy Commissioner Abul Basar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman, installation of wash blocks, construction of seating areas and widening of public movement will be done.

District Administration Senior Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Md Tawhidul Islam said that there were about 17 small and big shops on government land. These illegal establishments have been evicted.  The road leading up here is very narrow.  These illegal structures have acted as a deterrent.  There was a problem in public movement.  They were informed earlier too, but the establishments were not evacuated.  Steps were taken to evict these illegal structures on the day.

Mentionable that there are about 30 government offices and courts including Divisional Commissioner's Office, District Commissioner's Office, District and Sessions Judge's Court, Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on Parir Pahar under Kotwali Police Station of Chittagong.  About 3,000 officials and judges, 7-8 thousand lawyers and 4-5 thousand legal assistants perform duties in the said courts and offices.

About 20,000 people travel here every day to take government services and expect justice.  This causes heavy traffic on a small road with a large number of people and it is almost impossible to take a person who is seriously ill to the hospital for treatment. There is no open space to provide restrooms, toilets, drinking water or other facilities to such a large number of service seekers. 0.1436 acre property of BS 3024 & 3030 dag situated on Parir Pahar BS 01 Khas Khatian, BS 01 of Andarkilla Mauza was earlier taken to provide similar facilities but 17 encroachers were illegally occupying the said land.

Despite repeated requests to free the said property, they did not release it.  Later, when eviction notice was issued by creating document no. 09/2017 for eviction, they filed writ petition no. 18744/2017 and 18872/2017 in the Hon'ble High Court Division, as a result of which the rescue operation was suspended.  Due to the settlement of both the rets on November 27 and November 23 last year 2023, Thursday on January 11, 2024, the district administration of Chittagong has implemented the eviction drive.
