11-member working group formed to restore flow of canals in Dhaka

The government has formed an 11-member working group headed by an additional deputy commissioner (revenue) to restore the flow of canals in Dhaka and reclaim those from illegal encroachments.

According to a notification of the Ministry of Water Resources issued on Tuesday (November 5), the working group will also work to build ‘Blue Network’ centering the canals after making those free from illegal occupations and pollutions.

The members of the working group include representatives of the Bangladesh Water Development Board, representatives of the Inland Water Transport Authority, representatives of the Department of Environment, representatives of the River Protection Commission, Representative of Local Government Engineering Department, Representative of Dhaka North City Corporation, Representative of Dhaka South City Corporation, Representative of Capital Development Authority, One representative of NGO/Voluntary organization and student 

representative (nominated by local administration).

The letter informed that the committee will immediately organise a 3-day workshop and formulate a preliminary action plan.

It is also said that after formulating the initial action plan, the action plan will be finalized after discussing with the stakeholders. The committee will submit the final action plan to the ministry by November 30.
