100 houses, croplands eroded in Manikganj

The erosion of the Dhaleshwari River in Saturia upazila of Manikganj district has started with the rising of water level in the Jamuna river as it is one of the branches of Jamuna.

The vast areas of Baraid union, Dighulia union, Tilli union and Horgoj union including cultivated lands, domestic houses and educational and religious institutions engulfed the Dhaleshwari river. Most of the people under the erosion areas have taken shelter at their relatives' houses, the local public representatives said. 

Abdul Jalil, one of the victims of Sonka village under Baraid union, said though he had shifted his household items, he lost his rising crop lands. Another victim of the same village Abul Kalam said before the flood the erosion made them homeless.

Tilli Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Shafiqul Islam said more than 15 domestic houses of the union have been immersed in the Dhaleshwari river in a few days.

Chairman of Saturia Upazila Parishad and valiant freedom fighter Abdul Mazid said that about one hundred domestic houses including some institutions have already disappeared in the Dhaleshwari river.

They had already informed the concerned authorities to take necessary action to protect the erosion, he informed.

Executive Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in Manikganj Mainuddin said Geo-bag are throwing to protect the erosion at Baraid and Tilli unions of Saturia upazila and detecting the newly-affected areas of the upazila for taking necessary actions.
