10 jailed for DU question paper leak

A Dhaka court has sentenced 10 people in connection with the Dhaka University question paper leak case.

Of the convicted people, seven were sentenced to four years in prison, while the remaining three received two-year sentences.

Additional Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaja Hasibul Haque pronounced the verdict on Sunday. Defense lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the matter,

As the convicted people are currently absconding, arrest warrants have been issued against them. However, 114 other accused individuals were acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

According to the case statement, on October 20 in 2017, when the CID raided two residential halls of Dhaka University and arrested two students-- Mamun and Rana. Based on information from the arrestees, the following day, a university admission seeker named Rafi was apprehended from the examination hall.

That same day, a case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka under Section 63 of the 2006 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act and Section 9(b) of the 1980 Public Examinations Act.

In 2019, CID Senior ASP Suman Kumar Das submitted the charge sheet, accusing 125 individuals, including 87 Dhaka University students.

However, Cyber Tribunal of Dhaka later acquitted all the accused from the charges filed under the ICT Act.

The trial of 124 individuals then proceeded under Section 9(b) of the 1980 Public Examinations Act in Dhaka's Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
