Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 1,758 individuals, including 20 top leaders of the BNP and Jamaat, and filed 154 cases with various police stations in connection with violence, vandalism, arson, looting, and attacks on law enforcers and the government properties during the quota reform movement.
KN Roy Niyati, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of the Media and Public Relations Department of the DMP, confirmed it on Wednesday.
According to sources in the DMP, a widespread operation is ongoing in the capital. In the last 24 hours, 601 people were arrested from different areas of Dhaka. Most of the detained individuals are activists of Jamaat and BNP.
KN Roy Niyati said, “The operation is against those who committed violence in the capital in the name of the quota movement. So far, the DMP has arrested 1,758 people.”
The attacks on various police establishments in Dhaka city have resulted in a financial loss of approximately Tk61 crore, according to the DMP.
DMP Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker said, “Those who planned, executed, and financially supported the violence during the quota reform movement will be identified, and none will be spared.”
He said BNP-Jamaat terrorists were responsible for this violence.
Biplob Kumar Sarker said so far 154 cases had been filed with various police stations.
Highlighting the damages in Dhaka city, the joint commissioner said a total of 69 establishments were attacked in Dhaka. Additionally, 54 traffic boxes were burnt down.
Miscreants set fire to various government offices, metro rail stations, passport offices, police outposts, prisons, banks, buses, private cars, trucks and other vehicles across the country from Thursday to Saturday.
Though students have started the quota movement, on Thursday, BNP-Jamaat activists took command of the movement and unleashed a reign of terror across the country.
They set fire to the BTV Headquarters, Bridge Division Building, BRTA building, two metro rail stations, Disaster Management Building, NRBC Bank in Gazipur, DESCO office in Tongi Cherag Ali, Narayanganj passport office, Narsingdi prison, Azimpur police outpost, and other establishments.
Miscreants also looted valuables from the BTV, metro rail stations, BRTA office, Narsingdi prison and other government offices.
