Noakhali's Dwip Upazila Hatiyar Chatlaghat, Moulvirchar and Saddam Bazar Ghat areas in the Meghna River in an operation to seize illegal 1 lakh 80 thousand meters of charghera nets, 10 behundi and 8 mosquito nets were seized by the naval police. At that time, 1 lakh 25 thousand pieces of shrimp fry were recovered from a fishermen's house.
Illegal nets were set on fire and shrimp fry were released into the Meghna River on Wednesday morning in the presence of fisheries officials and public representatives.
Nasir Uddin, in-charge of Nalchira Naval Police Outpost, said raids were carried out at various places along the Meghna River on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning on the basis of secret information. The nets were seized while hunting prawns in Meghna with mosquito nets. It was not possible to arrest anyone as the fishermen fled after sensing the presence of the police. Later, a search was conducted at the temporary hut of the fishermen on the bank of the river and 1 lakh 25 thousand pieces of shrimp fry were seized.
"We have a campaign to stop the use of illegal nets. Our two teams are working separately on the river,” he said.
